WAPI (Water Pasteurization Indicator) Project in Ghana - Ahomkromoah

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene are critical to health, survival and development yet a lot of people are living without access to safe water. According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitory Programme report (2017), 2.1 billion people globally lacks access to safely managed drinking water services. Living without safe water expose consumers to diseases. It is estimated that, 842,000 people die every year from diseases caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and hygiene (WHO, 2012). This is no different in Ghana: most rural communities do not have access to safe drinking water. To help some of these communities have access to safe water, The WASH Club (Ghana) in collaboration with Extra Mile Ministry (USA), distributed WAPI devices to a rural community in Ghana. This community, Ahomkromoah, relies on a stream (unsafe) as their source of drinking water and for other domestic purposes. They consume the water without any prior treatment and this expose them to several diseases. The project was successful starting with a workshop on good water management, sanitation and hygiene practices. The community was excited and showed much gratitude to the team. After the workshop, the WAPI device was distributed to the community and the team left. As the community uses the WAPI to keep them safe from water-related diseases, the team is looking for best alternate source of drinking water (borehole) for the community.
